Diamonds and pearls

If you saw last night's debate, you may have noticed that the last question came from a young student at UNLV (the school that hosted the event), who asked Hillary Clinton if she preferred diamonds or pearls. (Mrs. Clinton, noting that she had been criticized for not making up her mind, said, "Both!") The other candidates--all male--jumped in with their responses to this sexist question, which they had to call out over Wolf Blitzer bringing the event to a close. I think I heard Obama show decisiveness by saying "Diamonds!"

Turns out that the young woman was forced to ask the question by CNN. (Forced being, in this connection, an elastic term; no one held a gun to her head.)

If I were asked the question, I'd have to say "Pearls." You see, in Hebrew, my name means "pearl."

This is nothing but yet another reason to attack and smear Hillary. I actually thought it was a pretty valid question.

TONE was certainly not attacking Mrs. Clinton for her response; perhaps the post did not make clear that when she said she was criticized for not making up her mind, she did it in a joking tone.

The question was not serious; there may be room for a question like that to lighten things up; placing the question at the end is bad judgment. (TONE would like to ask the question that Father Guido Sarducci, of Saturday Night Live, said he'd ask if he were at a debate: "If you were an animal, what kind of animal would you be?" (Fr. Sarducci did it in an Italian accent, which made it funnier.) I think that is actually a good question.

As for smearing Hillary, all the criticism I've seen has been of CNN, not of her, at least for her answer to that question.
