Jim Webb on Obama's problem in Appalachia. A smart, thoughtful and tough guy. He would certainly put the Old Dominion into play, if not in the Democratic column, and could be a help in nearby North Carolina and West Virginia as well.

I admire Jim Webb, his values and intellect.
While he might be a great VP for the reasons you mentioned, I'd hate to lose him in the Senate.
The value of the VP candidate to deliver states is not clear.
I'd like Obama to choose a state governor who is attractive, but minimally controversial. If that were to be a woman it might help the Hillary supporters support Obama, and stop the stories that they would vote for McCain if Hillary is not the candidate.
A governor is not as likely to have a track record of changing sides on issues as members of Congress have, by necessity. It's the nature of the job of members of Congress to compromise, which can be, and has been,(re: Swift Boating, used against them, as flip floppers.
Governors, more like Presidents, make tough decisions after hearing all sides.
